  • The community is currently very surprised, as Youtube has without warning blocked or deleted videos dealing with cryptocurrencies.
  • This also removed videos from already large Youtube channels, without advertising a scam in the video itself.

Youtube is the second largest search engine in the world after Google and therefore has a great responsibility to keep the platform free of fraudsters and misleading content. For example, no pornographic content or fastball system may be advertised. However, in the last few days a trend can be observed that is causing an uproar in the community.

Youtube blocks videos related to cryptocurrencies without warning

There is currently fierce debate in the community about why Youtube has removed videos from some channels that deal with cryptocurrencies. So far it does not seem to be relevant how big or influential the respective Youtube channel is, but it is sufficient if the video itself deals with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Cardano or IOTA.

The community is currently trying to find out what the real reason for the new wave of censorship is and according to which criteria Youtube acts in most cases. Chris Dunn, a famous youtuber, has more than 200,000 subscribers and shares his observations on Twitter. He does not understand what intent Youtube is currently using and on what basis it is decided whether a video strikes the Youtube guidelines. He states:

.@YouTube just removed most of my crypto videos citing “harmful or dangerous content” and “sale of regulated goods”… it’s been 10 years of making videos, 200k+ subs, and 7M+ views. WTF are you guys doing

@TeamYouTube?!

Other affected Youtube channels include Node Investor with 54,000 subscribers and Chico Crypto with 67,000 subscribers. Some of the Youtubers were even blocked for one week and some content even for a longer period. The platform has classified the content as “harmful or dangerous” and cites “sale of regulated goods” as the main reason.

The community has not yet received a clear answer from Youtube. However, the Youtubers are drawing a clear conclusion. They want to switch to decentralized platforms in the future, which are censorship-free and such incidents cannot happen.

Google had already started to remove content related to cryptocurrencies from its own advertising network in 2018, so that Google Adsense users will no longer receive Bitcoin advertising. It remains to be seen whether Youtube will take a stand on this or unlock the videos again.

Twitter wants to become the first decentralized social media platform

Tim Draper recently announced that Twitter will become more decentralized. The platform is to be based entirely on open source code, thus ensuring complete transparency. Dorsey wants to set a precedent and implement the transparency principles of blockchain technology within its own company. To this end, Draper has created a new team of developers to pursue this task.

Draper gets support from Cardano CEO Charles Hoskinson, who supports the vision of decentralization and provides Draper with technical knowledge and resources as and when he needs them. Large enterprise platforms are subject to censorship because not all content is considered helpful or appropriate for the masses by the platform operators.

It remains exciting to see which other decentralized social media platforms will emerge in the near future.
