  • VeChain launched Digital Lab Test Wallet for Covid-19 management.
  • The wallet forms part of the successful E-HCert App used by hospitals in Cyprus.

VeChain has ramped its partnerships with key health agencies as it continues its war against Covid-19. Earlier this week, the leading enterprise supply blockchain service launched a Digital Lab Test Wallet as part of its efforts to manage COVID19 records in Cyprus.

Adding to the Tool Suite

The digital wallet is part of the E-HCert App, an archival solution used by hospitals to store coronavirus antibody records. VeChain launched the E-HCert App in May following a collaboration with I-Dante, a local digital healthcare solutions provider.

The app helps to manage data from COVID-19 RT-PCR and antibody tests. First adopted by the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus, the platform gives hospitals a simple and straightforward method of putting COVID-19 test records on-chain and delivering final results to patients.

However, as this week’s blog post explained, the digital wallet will improve the app even more. Primarily, it provides a suite of blockchain-enabled services. It allows patients to seamlessly access test results, while healthcare authorities ensure data integrity maintenance.

The wallet gives medical professionals access to a blockchain-based web portal to request patients’ medical records as they please. Records are stored on the blockchain, so they are secure and immutable.

Automating Test Data Management

Explaining the benefit of the new system, the VeChain Foundation highlighted that many healthcare facilities in Cyprus use expensive paper trails to handle large amounts of data.

Most hospitals also use Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), which assist specialists in managing the data. Describing the system’s deficiencies, the foundation explained:

Firstly, the patient has to wait days for the completion of all tests prior to receiving results. In addition, the hospital laboratory has to contact the patient, deliver physical test results whilst the patient has to then maintain a hard copy of the results in good condition to ensure access to subsequent healthcare services.

The E-HCert app helps to get around this. Once a patient takes a lab test, results are uploaded to the E-HCert app and the VeChainThor blockchain. Users will be able to access the digital wallet using their unique credentials. Once complete, they can access their test data and take the appropriate next steps.

Like the E-HCert App, this new feature had been tested at the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus. However, the VeChain Foundation confirmed that Aretaeio Hospital, a medical facility in the Strovolos Municipality, had also signed up to be part of its ecosystem. The foundation is hoping that more hospitals can sign up.

Both hospitals will start using the blockchain platform from January 2021. The VeChain Foundation estimates that the platform could serve up to 100,000 people a year. As Crypto News Flash reported last month, VeChain is also working with the Chinese government to build digital tools that would strengthen their public health system.
