  • Donald Trump believes that Bitcoin has a greater role to play in the US economy while emphasizing its strategic importance in maintaining global competitiveness against countries like China.
  • Peter Schiff has strongly opposed Trump’s proposal to use Bitcoin to tackle the national debt, calling it a strategy to gain support and donations from the Bitcoin community.

Former US President Donald Trump believes that issuing crypto cheques could be an option to address the soaring US debt, which grossed more than $35 trillion last week, per the Crypto News Flash report.

He said that Bitcoin could be a “key tool” in addressing the concerns pertaining to the burgeoning US National Debt. “Who knows, maybe we’ll pay off our $35 trillion, hand them a little crypto check, right? We’ll hand them a little Bitcoin and wipe out our $35 trillion,” said Donald Trump.

Trump’s comments came after his crypto push during the Bitcoin 2024 Conference last month in July, wherein he proposed a greater role for digital assets in the US economy. The former US President appeared at the conference in his latest attempt to reach out to the crypto community.

During an interview with Fox Business, Donald Trump highlighted Bitcoin’s growing importance as a global asset as it seeks to overtake Silver’s market cap. He further stated that within a decade’s existence, Bitcoin has become bigger than most of the world’s companies. “I mean, if you look at the market, it’s bigger than many countries. It’s a very big thing,” he said.

Besides, Donald Trump also stressed the strategic importance of adopting Bitcoin, adding that if the US fails in this area, it could give leverage to other nations like China.

Peter Schiff Criticizes Donald Trump’s Bitcoin Solution

Peter Schiff, the popular economist and Bitcoin critic, strongly criticized Trump’s proposal to use BTC to solve the US national debt. Schiff added that Trump’s proposal is just an attempt to appeal to Bitcoin supporters. He further added that this tactic is to secure votes and donations from the crypto community.

However, several other lawmakers have also shared Trump’s opinion that Bitcoin should be a strategic US reserve. Last week, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lumis proposed a Bitcoin reserve bill suggesting that the US buy at least 1 million Bitcoins as part of its Treasury and thus hold 5% of the total BTC supply, per the CNF report.

Besides, Trump stated that countries worldwide would inevitably adopt Bitcoin and that the US would lead in that regard. “If we don’t embrace it, other countries are going to embrace it. Other countries will anyway. But we can be the leader, and we might as well be the leader,” he said.

Trump also said that the US has the necessary talent and resources to lead in this space. Besides, Trump criticized the Biden administration’s approach to crypto regulations, adding that they lack the necessary understanding to manage the sector effectively.

Amid fears of the US recession and Japan’s Nikkei crashing by 13% today, the bitcoin price has tanked by 13% at press time and is trading at $52,643. With today’s fall, BTC has extended its weekly losses to more than 25%.
