  • Project based on the OpenWifi standard to connect Movistar users with the Helium Mobile Network, optimizing services.

Telefónica, a telecommunications service provider, and Nova Labs, specialists in decentralized wireless communication technologies, have established an agreement to implement Helium Mobile Access Points in Mexico.

The objective of this pilot project, currently being implemented in cities such as Mexico and Oaxaca, is to expand Telefónica’s coverage and integrate mobile data transmission with the Helium Mobile Network.

The collaboration is based on the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) OpenWifi standard, providing selected Movistar users in Mexico with the option to connect to the Helium Mobile Network using their Movistar SIM cards.

José Juan Haro, Director at Telefónica, indicates that the project seeks to increase coverage through collaborative and cost-efficient solutions, with the possibility of extending this modality to other mobile networks of the company in the region.

Helium Mobile Access Points, integrated into a Telefónica management system, facilitate automatic access to the Helium Mobile Network for mobile data transfer, maintaining control over the user experience and quality of service. This approach combines cellular networks with the additional coverage of the Helium Mobile Network, with projections for global deployment and use by various operators.

The use of Helium Mobile Access Points represents a reduction in telecommunications infrastructure costs, allowing individuals and micro-enterprises to participate in the expansion of Telefónica’s coverage.

Amir Haleem, CEO of Nova Labs, points out that this collaboration solves telecommunications challenges and offers a solution for secure data transfer on a global scale, reducing infrastructure costs without compromising quality of service.

The Helium Mobile Network allows Telefónica to access and manage new coverage, especially in critical areas. The Access Points, due to their compact design, facilitate their installation and deployment, improving mobile coverage and facilitating the transfer of data from primary networks to the Helium Mobile Network. This solution, based on community participation, operates on a transparent economic model, backed by Helium’s blockchain technology.

Telefónica, with a large subscriber base in Europe and Latin America, and a listing on several stock exchanges, and Nova Labs, with its focus on decentralized wireless communications and the Helium Network, join forces to optimize mobile connectivity and coverage through this initiative, marking a breakthrough in the integration of telecommunications solutions based on collaboration and advanced technology.
