  • Security experts have identified a mischievous Xumm Wallet extension on the Chrome web store that tricks users and can lead to a loss of funds when interacted with.
  • The XRPL community and Xumm developers warn users against the fake extension, pushing for its removal from the store.

The Xumm Wallet, widely recognized for its role in the XRPL ecosystem, has recently been the focus of scam operations. The latest incident involved a bogus browser extension on the Chrome web store posing as an official product.

Extension Scam Targets Xumm Users

A fake Xumm Wallet plugin has appeared on the Chrome web store, masquerading as a legitimate service to XRPL users. Despite accumulating over 40 positive reviews likely fabricated to lend it credibility, the extension remains an active threat. Users have been conned by transferring funds to addresses provided by the scam plugin, which results in immediate loss of assets. The XRPL community has taken proactive measures against this threat, with reports flooding in to have the extension removed.

Investigations have revealed that the false plugin is notably distinct from the authentic Xumm Wallet, which has over 600,000 active mobile users. It features typographical errors and only records 42 users—warning signs for vigilant members of the cryptocurrency community. Xumm’s original service, notably absent from browser stores, is accessible solely via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Proactive Measures and Community Advice

In response to the fraudulent activity, experts advise users to avoid the fake plugin entirely. Google has been alerted to the scam, with the XRPL community urging the tech giant to act swiftly to protect users. The message is clear: if it’s not on the official mobile platforms, it’s not the real Xumm Wallet.

Xumm’s stance is firm in maintaining the wallet as a mobile-exclusive application, avoiding introducing browser plugins due to the heightened risk of scams and phishing attacks inherent in such platforms. The wallet’s developers reinforce this position, emphasizing the enhanced security measures available on mobile devices that are not as easily replicated on desktops.

Expansion Amidst Security Warnings

Amid the security challenges, Xumm Wallet has made significant strides in its service offerings. Xumm has established a partnership with Uphold to facilitate zero-fee XRP purchases, enhancing its appeal to users looking for efficient transactions without incurring additional costs. Furthermore, Xumm’s integration with SimpleSwap and the addition of numerous other payment channels mark a strategic advancement to support a broader range of XRP transactions and foster ecosystem growth.

While Xumm has been busy fortifying its platform and expanding user services, the issue of security remains a dominant concern. For the Xumm team, ensuring the user community is well-informed and protected against such fraudulent activities is paramount. Their approach underscores the critical need for vigilance in the rapidly evolving digital currency landscape, where threat actors frequently adapt their methods to exploit new opportunities.

Xumm Alerts on Samsung Galaxy S21 Issue Resolved

Over a month prior, Xumm promptly communicated a critical notice to its users, specifically targeting owners of Samsung Galaxy S21 devices. The wallet experienced malfunctions following a software update from Samsung on October 12, which corrupted the wallet’s secure data storage and led to the app failing to reopen post-update.

Xumm responded to this development, assuring its Samsung user base through social media that a resolution was in place. “Everything is back to normal for Xumm and Samsung users: Samsung has distributed an update rectifying their earlier flawed update that caused Xumm and other applications to crash,” XRPL developer Wietse Wind announced via Twitter.
