  • Mewe and Frequency announce a partnership to solve problems in social media.
  • BOTLabs GmbH and Deloitte Consulting AG also integrated KILT blockchain technology.

Social network platform, MeWe, has announced that it has integrated with Frequency blockchain network, which is a parachain of Polkadot. According to the announcement made on April 26 at the Consensus 2023, the migration of its users’ accounts to the network would begin this quarter. This partnership was also posted by the official Polkadot (DOT) Twitter account.

Just in from #Consensus 2023 – Polkadot parachain @one_frequency has announced a major partnership with social networking app @mewe to connect its 20 million users to Polkadot and the Social Web, giving each of them a social identity and full control over their own data.

The integration is also said to be based on the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP). Based on research, this was initially worked on by Woodham as part of Frank McCourt’s Project Liberty. It can be recalled that McCourt invested $100 million in the project in 2021.

During the Consensus 2023, there was a panel discussion on the topic “Laying Web3‘s Foundation With Decentralized Social Networks and Data Rights.” Here, MeWe CEO Jeffrey Edell disclosed that the partnership is part of its decision to make a permanent commitment to data ownership of users.

Blockchain is like doubling down on privacy. So now you’re allowing the technology to do what companies promise […] Someday MeWe could get acquired by someone, a big company, and in that instance, the privacy aspects could be lost, but once we commit to the blockchain, we’re committing to that privacy side. We never surveilled, and we never amplified bad news or misinformation, that’s just not something we do, so we’re very logically set up to move into the Web3 world. We have to sort of march into that slowly and prudently but with full commitment.

The Partnership Cannot Solve All Social Media Problems

Braxton Woodham of McCourt Global was also on the panel. In his submission, he lauded the potential of the partnership. It was also clarified that this integration will not solve all problems in social media right away. Even that, there will be a provision of a basic framework for app developers to build upon to fix different problems in the future.

Social networks involve a lot of different problems, ranging from user experience to moderation to AI algorithms for curation. It’s virtually impossible to solve all problems at once, so the approach we’ve been taking together is, let’s link our digital presence together on the web to create the social web. That sets up the ability to attack the data layer and approach those difficult problems.

In other news, BOTLabs GmbH and Deloitte Consulting AG have integrated KILT blockchain technology. This is to issue reusable digital credentials to support KYC and KYB processes. Deloitte has also disclosed that it would provide a credential wallet in the form of a browser extension. It is important to note that credentials are digitally signed by Deloitte. In this case, they can revoke them using blockchain technology in case the condition of the customer is changed after credentials are used.
