  • As Guajardo displayed her Bitcoin-themed costume, the contest’s announcer remarked, “you can walk around dressed as cash without needing a sash.”
  • A poll of 1,269 El Salvadorans has revealed that the majority of the country’s residents show disinterest in Bitcoin.

Ahead of the semifinals of the miss universe 2022 pageant contest, El Salvador’s representative, Alejandro Guajardo (a model and actress), wore a BTC-themed costume while parading the stage. On Thursday, Guajardo shared pictures of her wearing her fashionable outfit on Instagram and tagged the country’s president, Nayib Bukele. The costume included a giant colon with cocoa beans adornment strapped to her back.

Then, the model carried a staff having a massive physical BTC head on her right hand. It is worth mentioning that before 2001, the colon was El Salvador’s legal tender before they replaced it with the US Dollar. The contest’s announcer remarked, “this appearance exhibits El Salvador’s currency history.

History of currencies

Before the US Dollar became El Salvador’s legal tender, cocoa then the colon were the nation’s previous currencies.” However, the country made the US Dollar its legal tender in 2001. Furthermore, El Salvador replaced the US Dollar with BTC as its legal tender in 2021.

A move that caused severe criticism from top world economies as it was the first time any country would make the leading digital asset a legal tender. The pageant announcer said, “you can walk around dressed as cash without needing a sash.”

According to the costume designer Francisco Guerrero, a plastic artist, putting the BTC in front means the digital currency represents El Salvador’s legal tender over the long term. Nevertheless, no one knows whether El Salvador’s president or the Salvadoran government had a hand in using the costume to promote the broader adoption of BTC through this global medium.

After El Salvador adopted BTC as its legal tender, Bukele has been updating the world about its BTC purchases. He tweeted last November that the country will be increasing its BTC holdings by 1 BTC daily. There are 84 contestants at this year’s miss universe pageant, with 16 semifinalists to be chosen from the current stage.

While Guajardo was walking the New Orleans stage, El Salvador’s lawmakers approved a bill that provides the structure for BTC-based bonds. Some lawmakers suggested that the bonds could be used to fund the creation of a volcano-powered BTC city and repay some of the country’s sovereign debt.

El Salvador’s Bitcoin interest

Meanwhile, a poll of 1,269 El Salvadorans performed by José Simeón Caas Central American University has revealed that most of the country’s residents still do not fully support the country’s decision to make BTC a legal tender. Many of them continue to show disinterest in the leading digital asset.

According to the poll’s results, not up to 25 percent poll audience owned and utilized digital currencies in 2022. Also, 66 percent said the approval of Bitcoin as a legal tender was a failure, while 17 percent tagged it as a success. Furthermore, 78 percent suggest that the nation’s president should stop wasting public funds buying BTC.
