  • The IOTA Foundation has unveiled the “Persistent Selv” demo in cooperation with Dark Matter Labs.
  • The project demonstrates the inheritance and legacy of self-sovereign identities (SSIDs).

In the third part of its series on the EIT Climate KIC Deep partnership, the IOTA Foundation reported yesterday on the “Persistent Selv” demo. EIT Climate KIC is Europe’s largest public-private innovation partnership focused on accelerating the transition to a carbon-free economy.

The “Persistent Selv” demo is the result of a collaboration with Dark Matter Labs, a strategic research, design and development lab, and was produced with funding from EIT Climate KIC as part of the “Deep Demonstration on long-termism.” It builds on Selv, IOTA’s demonstration platform for self-sovereign identities (SSIDs) and aims to demonstrate the vision of long-term digital identity.

An SSID based on IOTA

The basic idea of “Persistent Selv” is based on Dark Matter Labs’ idea of “major transitions in contemporary societies” to respond to “the technological revolution and climate collapse.” Their goal is to discover, design, and develop institutional “dark matter,” in this case heredity, that supports a more democratic, distributed, and sustainable future.

As Florian Doebler explains in the blog post, we tend to “treat data as a commodity. But while the prospect to control and individually being able to monetize data is promising for many, our digital data might end up being the longest lasting remainder of our time on earth and as such, a highly emotional and important part of our legacy.

In line with this, Indy Johar, founder and CEO of Dark Matter Labs, explained the motivation behind developing a new understanding of inheritance and legacy:

A set of new inheritance and legacy mechanisms built on the backbone of emerging tech can release opportunities to establish diverse Persistent Selves. We can start thinking, how can we incentivise individuals to plan long-term self-executing digital actions beyond their life, for the benefit of future generations? What types of inheritances, beyond monetary wealth, can we pass on?

The Persistent Selv Demo aims to demonstrate the idea of how one or more identities can be linked to a current or future commitment. For example, users of the app, which is available for both iOS and Android, can commit to donating digital assets or reducing their carbon footprint.

Through the imaginary Good Ancestor Registry, users can then share their commitments with future generations, while maintaining privacy, to ensure that you pass on their values and that their legacy is preserved through verifiable evidence.

Doebler also declared that the Persistent Selv Demo was developed with the help of experts in the field of “futures literacy,” the understanding of the role for action for the future, at UNESCO and the University of Turku in Finland.
