- The IOTA Foundation yesterday released a testnet upgrade with full implementation of Chrysalis.
- According to co-founder Dominik Schiener, with the release IOTA is in the “final stages of the biggest upgrade in history.”
The full launch of Chrysalis phase 2 is getting closer step by step. As CNF reported, according to Dominik Schiener, the launch has already received “the seal of approval from more than a dozen companies” and is expected to take place before the end of the first quarter of 2021 in any case. And as the IOTA Engineering account wrote yesterday via Twitter, Chrysalis has now been fully activated on the test network.

Dominik Schiener added his own tweet to the announcement, revealing that “all components are now implemented” and live on the Chrysalis testnet.

A look at the change log shows that the upgrade brings a number of important changes.
- Implement dust protection according to [RFC 32](https://github.com/iotaledger/protocol-rfcs/pull/32).
- The HTTP API and MQTT streams have been adjusted in accordance with [RFC 27](https://github.com/iotaledger/protocol-rfcs/pull/27) and [RFC 33](https://github.com/iotaledger/protocol-rfcs/pull/33).
- The faucet will now deposit 10Mi per request.
- The network ID has been changed to testnet2.
- The HRP for Bech32 addresses is atoi.
- The genesis snapshot is new and the total supply resides on address atoi1qx82lpavrafwkp0jclqvz4gzm7vs5g5g8rwr00gcm62s8456l5jh67vutux/8eaf87ac1f52eb05f2c7c0c15502df990a228838dc37bd18de9503d69afd257d.
- The Coordinator starts publishing milestones from index 0 onwards again and milestone public keys remain unchanged.
- Max sizes for payloads are enforced: 32768 bytes for messages and 64 bytes for the index field of indexation payloads
The migration to IOTA Chrysalis phase 2 on the mainnet
As Dominik Schiener recently discussed as part of the IOTA Talks series, the transition to Chrysalis on the mainnet will be one of the “biggest challenges” for the IOTA Foundation. The biggest issue will be the migration from the current Winternitz One-Time Signature (WOTS) scheme to the new, more common signature scheme Ed25519.
This will drastically reduce transaction size, allow multiple address usage, and enable a significant increase in TPS. However, there is “no direct way to switch from one to the other,” Schiener stated. IOTA holders will be “able to transfer their tokens” during a transition period, with “exchanges like Binance, OKEx and Bitfinex being the most important as they will have to integrate the new library.”
