  • ETO GRUPPE has been awarded to supply Smart Green City Konstanz with 12 IoT weather stations, aimed at developing a comprehensive urban climate data platform.
  • The climate data platform, set to launch in mid-2024, will utilize IOTA for secure, decentralized data management, alongside testing an additional 12 mobile weather and soil measurement stations.

In a groundbreaking venture that marries technology and sustainability, ETO GRUPPE earns the accolade of spearheading a pioneering project in Smart Green City Konstanz, with its advanced Internet of Things (IoT) weather stations. This progressive endeavor, expected to take flight in mid-2024, underscores the integration of robust, stationary IoT weather stations and an intricate climate data platform based on IOTA’s tangle, renowned for its scalable, feeless, and decentralized data structure.

A Deep Dive into Smart-Green-City Ideals

Smart Green City Konstanz’s evolution has been intricately woven with its citizens’ participation, aiming for an integrated, sustainable, and community-oriented urban and regional development. This approach encapsulates the city’s dedication towards fostering “Quality of Life, Participation, and Resources” by promoting active co-creation of a digitally smart city by its residents. With a focus now on 23 specific project ideas after a strategic phase culminated in June 2023, Konstanz is set on becoming a beacon of digitalization designed for integrated, sustainable urban and regional development.

At the cornerstone of these projects lies the establishment of a centralized urban climate data platform, conceived to address all urban development policy climate objectives, especially a city climate modeling meant to account for climate change adaptations. The ambition goes beyond mere data collection; it aspires to substantially boost the resilience of urban systems in the long term and enhance the living quality within Konstanz.

By harnessing accurate, real-time climate data through the deployment of twelve stationary IoT weather stations, the initiative seeks to navigate through the nuances of climate change adeptly. Outfitted with IP6x certification, LoRaWAN connectivity, solar panels for autonomous energy supply, and a connection to the urban data platform, the stations are crafted to gauge parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and direction, with four stations further equipped to provide continuous surface temperature data.

Tailoring Climate Response through Precise Data Management

Through scrupulously capturing these urban climatic parameters, identifying “Heat Zones” or “Cold Zones” in urban quarters becomes viable, enabling the initiation of effective countermeasures and facilitating more targeted winter services in the future. ETO GRUPPE, having been awarded the contract in September 2023, will additionally proffer Konstanz twelve mobile weather and soil measurement stations for a test operation, inaugurating ETO’s new development, a mobile sensor rod, for the first time.

ETO’s expertise, broadened by Bonner ecoTech GmbH (a member of the ETO GRUPPE since May 2023), amplifies its prowess in environmental measurement technology through measuring devices and monitoring systems for water, soil, and air. ETO’s profound capabilities in digitization, innovative sensor technology, and a fitting product portfolio aspire to support cities like Konstanz in sculpting a future that is more livable, efficient, technologically advanced, ecological, and socially inclusive, ushering them into an era where technology and sustainability coalesce seamlessly.
