  • The collaboration focuses on integrating IOTA’s Tangle technology into STMicroelectronics’ X-CUBE-IOTA1 software, offering developers unique features in the STM32 open development environment.
  • IOTA’s Tangle technology, with its efficiency, scalability, and offline capabilities, addresses the challenges of IoT applications, positioning it as a driving force in the digital transformation of Industry 4.0.

In a significant development, STMicroelectronics has joined hands with IOTA to build infrastructure for industry 4.0. The partnership between the IOTA Foundation and STMicroelectronics marks a significant advancement in the Industry 4.0 landscape, focusing on streamlining IoT solutions by integrating Tangle technology, IOTA’s backbone, into STMicroelectronics’ X-CUBE-IOTA1 software.

Alessandro Cremonesi, Vice President of Systems Research and Application at STMicroelectronics, emphasizes that this collaboration enables developers to leverage the STM32 open development environment to create applications with IOTA’s unique features. Key industries, particularly energy and logistics, are likely to benefit from IOTA’s outstanding performance in critical areas such as power management, connectivity, and audio.

Leveraging IOTA’s Tangle Technology

Founded in 2015, IOTA has established substantial partnerships with industry leaders like Volkswagen, Fujitsu, and Samsung. Diverging from traditional cryptocurrencies, IOTA’s core technology is a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) instead of a blockchain. Its distinctive validation process involving two other transactions before sending a transaction ensures efficiency and scalability.

IOTA’s capability to operate offline and synchronize later addresses the challenges of IoT applications in environments where constant connectivity is not guaranteed. While IOTA currently relies on a centralized coordinator, its innovative approach has attracted significant industry players, positioning it as a driving force in digital transformation.

Industry 4.0 necessitates a revolutionary transformation, and IOTA’s Tangle technology emerges as a potential key to secure and efficient transactions. In an environment prioritizing privacy and security, Tangle offers a functional and intelligent mechanism. With its ability to conduct secure, high-speed, and cost-effective transactions, Tangle has become a pivotal element in the evolution of Industry 4.0. The capacity for generated data to be traded in an “industrial data marketplace” introduces a new level of flexibility and opportunity for companies looking to maximize their data’s value.

The collaboration between IOTA and STMicroelectronics not only signifies a synergy between blockchain innovation and cutting-edge electronics but also sets the stage for a future where interoperability and efficiency are paramount. By simplifying IoT solutions and providing an open development environment, this alliance is poised to propel the adoption of disruptive technologies in Industry 4.0, paving the way toward a smarter, more connected, and more efficient ecosystem.

The Global Shutter Image Sensor

STMicroelectronics has unveiled its latest global-shutter image sensor, representing a significant breakthrough in computer vision technology. Tailored for a range of applications, including AR/VR, personal and industrial robotics, drones, barcodes, biometrics, and gesture recognition, this sensor delivers exceptional resolution within a compact form factor and with minimal power consumption.

Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President of the Imaging Subgroup at STMicroelectronics, highlights the sensor’s standout attributes, including its dimensions of 2.7mm x 2.2mm, native resolution of 800 x 700 pixels, superior performance, low power consumption, and optimized cost.

The sensor not only excels in performance but also introduces innovative features such as native background removal and a 1mW autonomous ‘always-on’ mode. Thus, it ensures continuous awareness even when the device is powered off. Furthermore, its capability to provide event-style image streaming makes it well-suited for applications like eye tracking and motion estimation. ST has initiated the sampling phase for its new VD55G1, with mass production slated for March 2024.

The company aims to influence the market through strategic partnerships and integrated solutions for diverse applications and markets. For more in-depth technical information, refer to STMicroelectronics.
