  • The VSPT Wine Group in Chile executed the real-time monitoring of the carbon footprint for its BioGas plant using IOTA’s Tangle ledger.
  • They also leveraged the Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) framework of Project Alvarium, built together by Dell and IOTA.

For a long time now, Dell Technologies and IOTA have been working on green-energy applications. Under the open-source Project Alvarium, Dell and IOTA have been doing real-time monitoring of carbon footprint.

In the latest development, LF Edge successfully conducted a secure and accurate monitoring of the carbon footprint in the world’s first BioGas plant. To make this happen, LF Edge partnered with Dell, IOTA, ZEDEDA, and ClimateCHECK.

The delivery of accurate data in the climate industry has been one of the major concerns for corporations working in the green energy industry. The VSPT Wine Group in Chile needed a solution for its biodigestion energy and composting facility.

The job involved processing data from sensors measuring solids, water, gases, and anaerobic digestion processes thereby providing real-time and trustworthy insights into the facility’s carbon footprint.

The VSPT Wine Group faced the challenge of “certifying” an emission reduction statement. This statement would ensure that the measurement was accurate. Thus, to address this issue the VSPT Wine Group leveraged the Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) framework of Project Alvarium. Project Alvarium is a joint effort by IOTA and Dell to bring real-time tracking of carbon footprint.

The Digital MRV would further send all data across Project Alvarium’s DCF framework built atop the IOTA Tangle. The input data is gathered either in a manual or automated manner and passed through a Dell server running Project Alvarium code. The storage of results takes place on the IOTA Tangle ledger.

Executing the Project of Carbon Tracking

The VSPT Wine Group initially pre-installed the Dell server with EVE on the site and further connected it to the internet. Later, the respective project teams managed the applications for Alvarium and IOTA. It was also for the very first time that a Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) was built and deployed using actual hardware in a real-world environment. The official announcement notes:

The solution greatly improves Bio-E’s ability to understand how different innovations impact carbon emissions, lowering barriers on carbon credit issuance and improving investment in sustainable technologies. This in turn helps investors and organizations increase transparency and accuracy in reporting, avoiding incorrect reports and reimbursements.

The implementation was swift such that no application developers had to visit the site at the remote biodigester plant in Molina, Chile. The Digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (DigitalMRV) further digitizes the entire process. It helps in attaining very high levels of accuracy, efficiency, and transparency. A Digital MRV reduces the typical time of project execution from 24-48 months to complete to just 4-6 weeks.

Additionally, Dell and IOTA have also been working on transforming Urban Mobility using Intelligent Security systems (ISS).
