  • The competent court for the case Craig Wright against the Kleiman heirs has ruled to postpone the trial until January 2021.
  • The new trial date has been set for January 2021, with a retrial scheduled for December 15 and 21.

In a new twist to the Wright vs. Kleiman trial, the self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin and his plaintiff have asked to move the trial to next year. In a joint motion, both parties asked the court to extend the deadline “to work on a targeted joint presentation of the exhibits and objections, with the hope of reducing the number of disputes requiring judicial resolution”.

The trial was originally scheduled to begin on July 6 of this year, after many delays. However, the trial has been delayed by the introduction of additional motions, petitions and the Covid-19 pandemic that has paralyzed legal activity in some degree. In addition to the above, the motion introduced by the parties to postpone the trial stated the following:

Using the proposed deadlines to make streamlined, focused decisions will conserve judicial and party resources and lead to a better, and better considered, presentation of each side’s position at trial.

In a document released yesterday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, represented by Judge Beth Bloom, approved the motion. Therefore, the trial has been postponed to January 4, 2021. In addition, the parties must go to a review appointment for key parts of the trial between December 15 and 21 of this year, according to the document.

On that date the parties will review part of the list of evidence and objections, the demonstrative and summary evidence, the proposed verdict, the proposed interrogation, among other elements. As reported by CNF, the trial has focused on the whereabouts of the secret keys that would give access to the over 1.1 million Bitcoin of Satoshi Nakamoto.

Craig Wright vs. Roger Ver

Craig Wright, also called “Faketoshi” by a part of the crypto community, has gained notoriety for his legal battles. The self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin has brought lawsuits against important members of the crypto community, such as Blockstream’s CEO, Adam Back, and Ethereum’s co-creator, Vitalik Buterin.

He has now reintroduced a lawsuit against one of his rivals Roger Ver, one of Bitcoin’s forkers in Bitcoin Cash. Wright had already filed a libel suit against Ver that was dismissed by the High Court of England and then the Court of Appeal of England.

The new lawsuit claims that Ver committed defamation by claiming in a video posted on YouTube last year that Wright is “a liar and a fraud, so sue me, again”. The self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin seeks to prevent Ver from making similar statements in the future on similar platforms and on his Twitter account. Furthermore, Wright also seeks monetary compensation.
