  • The Central African Republic (CAR) expands its Sango blockchain initiative to tokenize land and resources.
  • Legal approval for tokenization business visas.

The Sango blockchain initiative in the Central African Republic (CAR) has been expanded to include the tokenization of its land and valuable resources. The country, recognized as one of the world’s poorest nations yet highly receptive to cryptocurrencies, remains remarkably engaged in pioneering crypto advancements.

As per an announcement shared on X (formerly referred to as Twitter), the CAR National Assembly sanctioned a law on July 24 to facilitate the tokenization of land and natural resources. Alongside other provisions within this law, it will enable the online acquisition of business visas and offer streamlined processes for citizens and foreigners to establish businesses and acquire licenses across domains such as real estate, agriculture, exploitation of natural resources, and forestry. The statement underscored the unanimous approval of this law.

Last year, the CAR unveiled its plans to tokenize its natural resources shortly following the initiation of the Sango project in May 2022. Alongside the inception of the Sango project, there was a simultaneous proposition for establishing a distinctive Crypto Island metaverse.

Numerous hurdles have emerged despite the CAR’s determined efforts to pioneer crypto adoption. In April 2022, the CAR made headlines as it became the first African nation and the second globally to embrace Bitcoin (BTC) as a national currency, valuing it at $26,467.

However, this decision was reportedly reversed in May of the current year. Concurrently, the country also introduced its proprietary cryptocurrency, the Sango, with the aim of supplanting the CFA (Financial Community of Africa) franc. Importantly, the creators did not intend for the Sango to function as a central bank digital currency.

Challenges Faced by Sango Launch: Constitutional Court’s Dismissal

The launch of the Sango encountered multiple challenges, including the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of the Sango-associated citizenship initiative. However, despite this setback, the citizenship program, valued at $60,000 in Sango, is still available for application through the Sango project website. Additionally, the nation is contemplating the potential incorporation of alternative cryptocurrencies.

In contrast to the CAR’s adoption of Bitcoin, the International Monetary Fund, a notable critic, has projected a 2.2% growth in the country’s gross domestic product for the current year. In April 2022, the nation gained significant attention by becoming the second country, following El Salvador, to embrace Bitcoin as an official form of currency alongside the CFA Franc.

However, approximately a year later, this legislation was rescinded. Despite this reversal, President Faustin-Archange’s commitment to cryptocurrency remains steadfast, with Sango acknowledging the leader’s pivotal role in introducing the new law.

President Faustin-Archange’s determination mirrors El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who has consistently dismissed external criticisms of his initiative to establish Bitcoin as legal tender in his nation. Subsequently, El Salvador has initiated educational and mining projects related to Bitcoin, and the President has enlisted well-known Bitcoin enthusiasts as personal advisors.
