  • The privacy-focused Samourai wallet, an open-source Bitcoin wallet, is working on implementing atomic swaps between Monero (XMR) and Bitcoin (BTC) to enhance user privacy.
  • The crypto community reacted in a mixed way with some even calling for the boycott of the Samourai wallet.

In the latest development, a privacy-focused open-source Bitcoin wallet – Samourai wallet – has started working on the implementation of atomic swaps between Monero (XMR) and Bitcoin (BTC). The goal of the Samourai wallet was to improve the privacy features of its users.

However, this development has seen some mixed reactions from the crypto community. The “laser eyes” community has disliked the idea.

Last week on August 4, a recognized developer (@SamouraiDev) of the Samourai Wallet shared a screenshot displaying lines of code that indicated an automated trade (swap) between BTC and XMR. This post was a response to a similar screenshot by a prominent contributor (@pokkst) to Monero’s open-source projects.

The original post didn’t specify where the code lines representing atomic swaps would be integrated. However, a subsequent comment sparked a new debate on Bitcoin Twitter, generating both supportive and positive responses, as well as negative criticisms and suggestions of boycotts.

Another Twitter user nosofast asked @pokkst “Bro, you teamed up with @SamouraiDev?!” Responding to this, @pokkst answered that they have also developed another privacy feature in the wallet app dubbed JoinBot.

In a tweet on August 5, Samourai wallet’s official Twitter account noted: Gatekeep all you want. We’ll bulldoze right through you, like we’ve unapologetically done since day one. Cross-chain atomic swaps between BTC and XMR are here, we’ve been hard at work to make it a reality, wipe the tears from your delicate little laser eyes.

Calls of Boycotting Samourai Wallet

A prominent Bitcoin influencer, PlateLicker (@PlateLicker_21m), urged his approximately 11 thousand followers to boycott Samourai Wallet due to its inclusion of a Monero-related feature. This call for action came in response to an official statement from the wallet’s account.

Vlad (@TheVladCostea), another Bitcoin influencer, pointed out that the problem stemmed from Samourai Wallet’s historical position in the industry as a wallet exclusively focused on Bitcoin. However, there are other influencers and accounts that came in defense of the Samourai wallet.

The concept of atomic swaps serves as peer-to-peer trading methods employed to transfer cryptocurrencies between diverse blockchains, all without the requirement of relying on intermediaries. This trustless swapping mechanism is a pivotal aspect of decentralized finance (DeFi) trading, where transactions take place on the blockchain itself, eliminating the necessity for third-party involvement.

In 2021, a group of Bitcoin enthusiasts began altering their Twitter profile pictures to include a “laser eyes” effect. The prevalent interpretation of this meme was to symbolize their bullish outlook on Bitcoin’s price movement and their intense concentration on BTC, while disregarding other projects in the cryptocurrency realm.

The laser eyes gesture evolved into a symbol for Bitcoin Maximalists, a community of investors who firmly believe that BTC is the sole legitimate and valuable cryptocurrency in existence.
